How to Disable Automatic Updates in WordPress

The WordPress 3.7 had come up with lots of new features automatic updates is one of them. WordPress can automatically update the plugins and themes of your website without any prior confirmation or notifications. Automatic updates are able to update only minor changes for major updates it will ask user confirmation.

WordPress and plugin automatic updates are important for security purpose. Many sites never update their WordPress and plugins after install. Although it is minor updates it may cause break your website.

In this article, we will show you how to disable automatic updates on your WordPress and Plugin.

With Coding (Configuring wp-config)

If you want to disable all automatic wordPress updates icluding minor and major add the following line of code in your wp-config.php file:

If you want to enable all automatic minor and major wordPress updates add the following line of code in your wp-config.php file:

define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', true );

If you want to enable the minor wordPress updates only (this is default feature) add the following line of code in your wp-config.php file:

define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', 'minor' );

If you want to enable the minor core WordPress updates, but disable theme and plugin updates add the following line of code in your functions.php file:

disable theme updates

disable plugin updates

add_filter( 'auto_update_theme', '__return_false' );

or

remove_action( 'load-update-core.php', 'wp_update_plugins' );
add_filter( 'pre_site_transient_update_plugins', create_function( '$a', "return null;" ) );

If you want to disable specific plugin updates add the following line of code in your functions.php file and configure accordingly.

Without coding

If you don’t have the coding knowledge you can also disable the update with the help of any plugin easily. There are multiple WordPress plugins available for this purpose. Just install the plugin and follow the instruction.
